Microsoft has officially released the Windows Phone 7.5, or Mango as it is popularly called to current Windows Phone devices. The update is not yet available for every phone but Microsoft has promises that it won’t take too long. However, it is clear that Microsoft is taking this update seriously and is making every possible effort to ensure that there are no mishaps like the NoDo update. It is aiming for a quicker and more efficient release.
With the release, there was no announcement made about the devices that will be the first to receive the update. However, there is a dedicated page on the Microsoft website that will show when the update is ready for a specific device and it is recommended that users check back on a periodic basis to ensure they get the update as soon as possible. For devices on which the update is available, the process is simple. It takes roughly 30 minutes and all that needs to be done is to connect the device to the computer, after installing the Zune client, and wait for it tell you an update is available then follow the prompts!
Apart from releasing the update, Microsoft has also added what could quite possibly be the most important aspect of a mobile operating system. This one is called the Web Marketplace which allows users the freedom to directly download apps, games etc. directly onto the phone without having the handset connected to the computer. This facility has been available on Android devices since the beginning and its absence in the Windows Phone OS was probably detrimental to it. This should be a good first step in bridging the gap. There is one downside to the new update however; it still doesn’t feature an internet hotspot facility on all phones. The reason for this was due to driver issues and older hardware, leaving it up to device manufacturers to rectify this.
Update: if you can’t wait to get mango and your carrier hasn’t sent it out to you yes then there is ‘trick’. All you have to do is connect your device, open Zune and go to settings. Once you click the update button in settings disconnect your internet, by removing the cord or disabling the connection. If timed correctly it should say an update is available, in which case you reconnect your internet connection then hit update.
