The only Fable game that I’ve ever really liked was Fable 2, as I’ve been thoroughly disappointed with every other game in the series — there were some neat ideas in those games, but I often felt like the execution fell flat. Despite that, the newly announced Fable Legends has piqued my interest, as the game blends two of my favorite genres together.
Like previous Fable games, players will be able to play as either a hero or a villain. Unlike previous Fable’s, you have to make this choice at the beginning of the game, as both sides play completely differently from each other: hero characters will play the game as a Diablo style, co-op hack and slash, while villain characters will experience the game as a tower-defense style strategy game that tasks them with halting the heroes’ progress.
Hero characters are separated into four distinct classes, including the tank like Hero of Strength, and the ranged DPS Hero of Skill. Unlike previous Fable games, it seems like the appearance and skill set of each character will be predefined depending on what class you pick. Up to four heroes will be able to join a single game.
Villain characters will view the game from a different perspective: instead of hopping into the levels and fighting the heroes directly, villain characters will be able to build and control enemy spawn points on the map via the Xbox One’s Smartglass connectivity.
No release date has been announced for Fable Legends, which is being developed by Lionhead Studios exclusively for the Xbox One.
