Attendees to Capcom’s panel at the San Diego Comic-Con were treated to an unexpected but completely welcome surprise: Capcom has announced a new Strider game, which will be a non-linear 2D action title in the vein of Metroid or Castlevania.
The new Strider title is presented in “2.5D” style (2D side-scrolling gameplay with 3D, polygonal graphics.) The game will feature the return of most of the bosses from the original game, and players will be able to upgrade Strider’s abilities and sword as they progress through his latest adventure; in the demo presented at SDCC, the developers of the game showcased one of Strider’s upgradable skills, which let him reflect enemies’ bullets back at them. Strider Hiryu’s iconic scarf will change colors depending on what upgrades you equip him with.
The game is being designed by key members of the original design team from Strider 1 & 2, while the technical aspects of the game are being handled by Double Helix, the development studio responsible for Silent Hill Homecoming and the upcoming Killer Instinct sequel for the Xbox One.
The new game is simply titled “Strider,” and will be released for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and Steam sometime early next year.
