The official Smash Bros. site revealed today that Pikmin’s Captain Olimar will return for the next Super Smash Bros. on 3DS and Wii U.
Olimar’s fighting style is still based around getting his Pikmin to fight for him. It seems like he’ll use the Purple and White Pikmin from Pikmin 2 in his special attacks rather than the Rock and Flying Pikmin from the upcoming third game in the series, which is strange because Smash Bros. usually tries to incorporate elements from its characters’ most recent games into their moves.
While Pikmin is far from Nintendo’s most popular franchise, Captain Olimar was one of the more popular characters in Smash Bros. Brawl: his ability to toss Pikmin onto his opponents and quickly stack damage made him one of the higher tier characters in SBB, to the point where some players considered him to be overpowered.
Captain Olimar is the tenth Brawl character who’s been announced to return for the upcoming, as-yet-untitled new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Three brand new characters have been announced for the game: the Wii Fit Trainer, the Villager from Animal Crossing, and of course, my personal favorite, Capcom’s Mega Man. Nintendo says they’ll reveal more characters, stages, and other features for the new game over the next few months on the official Smash Bros. website. The game is still scheduled to be released sometime in 2014. Captain Olimar’s next appearance will be in Pikmin 3, which will be released this August for the Wii U.
