There’s plenty of Android “micro” consoles hitting the market this year (the Ouya, Gamestick, and Mad Catz’s MOJO, just to name a few,) but word is that Google is planning to take on “The Big Three” themselves by developing their own Android powered console as well.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is developing new hardware to help them compete against Apple, and reportedly one of those new pieces of hardware is a dedicated gaming console. According to the WSJ’s sources, Google started developing the console after hearing rumors that Apple was developing a dedicated gaming device of their own. Apple and Google are constantly trying to one up each other with iOS and Android, so it seems likely that if one of them were to join the so-called “console war,” the other one would follow.
Google isn’t the only company that’s afraid of what might happen if Apple joins the gaming industry: Nintendo execs have repeatedly stated that they think Apple is the biggest threat to their business, and Valve’s Gabe Newell echoed similar sentiments earlier this year.
