As expected, Nintendo announced the latest 3D Mario platformer for the Wii U this morning, entitled Super Mario 3D Land. Developed by the same team that created that Wii’s Mario Galaxy games as well as the 3DS’s Super Mario 3D Land, the latest Mario features new suits for Mario to wear, as well as multiple playable characters.
While Mario 3D Land on 3DS was most obviously influenced by Mario 3, it seems like Nintendo is looking to Mario 2 (the American Mario 2, not the Lost Levels,) for inspiration with Super Mario 3D World. Like Mario 2, Mario 3D World will feature four playable characters: Mario, Luigi, the Princess, and Toad, each of whom have their own special abilities and weaknesses; as always, Luigi can run faster and jump higher than Mario, but is harder to control, while the Princess can use her dress to float in the air (no, I don’t understand how that works.) As always, Mario can equip power-up suits in order to expand his repertoire of moves: in today’s trailer, we glimpsed him using a new catsuit to scratch up enemies.
Rather than the wacky, gravity defying worlds of Mario Galaxy, it looks like Mario 3D World will feature the more of traditional level design seen in Mario 3D Land.
The biggest new addition seems to be co-op, a first for the 3D Mario games. Players will need to coordinate with their partner in order to solve certain environmental puzzles and navigate certain obstacles.
Nintendo will have Super Mario 3D World playable on the E3 show floor (which opens in just a few hours,) so check back later and I’ll keep you updated with my hands-on impressions with the game.
