In what could possibly be the worst-kept secret since the PlayStation Vita, a second listing has appeared in reference to Mirror’s Edge 2. This time, Amazon Italy is the culprit. The posting has since been taken down, so all we’re left with is the feature image above. After initially being listed by Amazon Germany, and promptly taken down, the reemergence of the title should at this point be taken as near-confirmation of an impending announcement during EA’s E3 press event. (Details about when/where to watch can be found here.)
As you can see from the image, the box art is obviously a placeholder, as was the release date listing of January 1, 2020; but since it’s hardly rare for retailers to enter unannounced titles into their systems in an effort to make them immediately available for pre-order, it’s more than likely this information is accurate. EA has yet to comment, but that’s reasonable considering they likely plan to showcase some footage and make the formal announcement during their presentation. It is interesting to note that the placeholder box art suggests the title will be coming to next-generation consoles, specifically the Xbox One. Which, while hardly surprising, is still nice to see.
While there’s little point in speculating about unannounced projects without any information to go on, I’m curious whether Mirror’s Edge 2 will run on the latest Frostbite Engine, as well as what kinds of enhancements will be made when upgrading from current-gen consoles to the likes of the PS4 and Xbox One. I also wonder if next-gen technology can help better the experience for those unable to play the game due to developing motion sickness, or if their perception of the on-screen action will remain largely unaffected. I expect we’ll find out soon enough.
Would you guys and gals be interested in a sequel to Mirror’s Edge? What types of new gameplay mechanics would you like to see implemented in the sequel? And who’s crazy enough to hope the game gets Oculus Rift support? Let us know down in the comments, and don’t forget to like IGXPro on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, or give us the ‘ol +1 on Google+.
