Sonic Lost World was one of the few pleasant surprises from the last Nintendo Direct, and today Sega revealed the first gameplay footage from the next Sonic platformer.
Sonic Lost World looks like a mix of Super Mario Galaxy’s gravity defying platforming and the warped worlds of the cancelled Sonic X-Treme for the Sega Saturn. Thankfully, the trailer makes it look like the game will be comprised entirely of platforming (no werehog combat or third person shooting!) and Sonic’s ever growing horde of (mostly annoying) sidekicks seem to be sitting this one out.
Sonic Lost Worlds is the first of three Wii U exclusive Sonic games: the second is the next game in the Mario and Sonic Olympics series, while the third game is still unannounced.
Lost World looks interesting, but I still find it difficult to get hyped for a new Sonic game: while I loved Sonic Colors and I thought that Generations was decent enough, it’s still hard to forget about the old Sonic Cycle… Yes, I’m still bitter about Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and The Black Knight, and Sonic 2006. With that said, Lost World looks like it’s going to stick to Colors and Generations’ winning mix of 2D and 3D platforming, so for now I’m going to approach it with some cautious optimism.
Sega says they’ll have more info on Sonic Lost World at E3, so expect some hands-on impressions then.
