If the games announced in today’s Nintendo Direct were enough to convince you to finally go out and buy a 3DS, you’re in luck: today Nintendo also announced that everyone who purchases a 3DS XL along with a copy of either Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates of Infinity or Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon will also receive a free downloadable title from the 3DS e-shop.
The selection of possible free games are as follows: Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone, Freaky Forms Deluxe, and Star Fox 3D. In order to be eligible for the promotion, you have to register your purchase of a 3DS XL and either Pokemon or Luigi’s Mansion with Club Nintendo before April 30th. Once you register both, Nintendo will send you a download code for the game of your choice. Unfortunately, people who purchased and registered a 3DS XL before today’s announcement (i.e. guys like me, who just bought a 3DS a little over a month ago,) are ineligible for the free game.
If you do qualify for the promotion, I’d suggest picking up Mario 3D Land over the other titles: while Star Fox and Prof. Layton are great games, Mario 3D Land is an amazing, console-quality 3D platformer, which is something of a rarity on handhelds. It also does a good job of showing off a lot of the 3DS’ special features, so it’ll be a good showpiece for your new system.
