RUMOR: PS4 to ditch the Dual Shock design for its controller

RUMOR: PS4 to ditch the Dual Shock design for its controller

Michael Lacerna 18 Jan

Sources within Sony have apparently told CVG that the company plans to abandon the Dual Shock controller when they launch the upcoming PS4. The same sources also said that Sony will finally unveil the PS4 within the next few weeks.

According to the rumor, Sony will retire the traditional Dual Shock design that Playstation systems have used for over 16 years in favor of something more innovative: the rumor suggests that the PS4 controller may feature biometric sensors that measure a player’s heart rate or stress level and even a Wii U-esque touch screen in the center of the controller. Sony apparently wants to incorporate all of the Vita’s unique control features into the PS4 controller, so perhaps features like a back-touch panel and a camera will be built into the PS4 controller as well.

This isn’t the first time Sony has tried to ditch the Dual Shock — the PS3 was originally unveiled with a boomerang shaped controller. The boomerang was apparently very comfortable to hold, but the design was quickly abandoned when it became the subject of a lot of jokes and hate from traditionalists who didn’t want to see the old Dual Shock design go away. It’ll be interesting to see how people react to the supposed controller change for the PS4. While I love my PS3 and I don’t hate the Dual Shock 3’s design, I have to admit that I’ve grown to like the Xbox 360 controller the most out of any of the standard controllers available this generation, and I know that I’m not alone in that opinion. It’s about time that the Dual Shock goes into retirement, and I’m really interested to see what Sony cooks up — it’s starting to sound like the Wii U might not have the weirdest controller this generation.

I hope they go back to the boomerang anyways. Haha

Sounds like they’re giving backward compatibility the shaft. Again. The Dualshock is basically a perfect design. Leave it be.
