Team Fortress 2’s never ending war between the Red and Blue factions seems like it’s about to get somewhat more complicated: fans of the game have discovered a few hints, and even a few pics culled from the game client, that seem to show that some big changes are coming to Valve’s perpetually popular team-based shooter.
Hints about the upcoming changes were initially found via an in-game ARG, which is typical of Valve — remember when Portal 2 was initially announced via some hidden files that were included in a update to the original Portal? Kotaku has documented how fans discovered the hidden info here, and it’s a great read that shows off the ingenuity of the TF2 community.
The TL;DR version of all the info is basically this: the Engineer has constructed an army of robots based around the existing TF2 character classes, and apparently the new “Gray” faction being added to the game consists of these AI-controlled bots. Current rumors seem to suggest that the new Robot faction won’t be playable, but will instead take the role of the antagonists in TF2’s first PvE mode, which will apparently have the Red and Blue teams joining forces to battle the robot threat in a new Gears of War style “Horde” mode.
Lending further credence to this rumor are some recently discovered files hidden within the Source Filmmaker, which apparently shows the 3D polygon models for this new faction, as well as some sort of giant tank that may be part of a new stage for the game:
Hints from Valve’s ARG seems to suggest that there will be some sort of announcement regarding Team Fortress 2 on September 2nd (which coincides with the final day of the PAX convention,) so I suppose we’ll find out then if all these rumors are true or if Valve is simply trolling all of us again. Maybe they’ll even announce Half-Life 3! (I can hope, can’t I?)
