Today, Google unveiled their somewhat secret project, Google Glass. The new “smart” glass technology was shown off in a very intense, live conference, video call. During the event you could see how the glasses built-in camera, microphone and wireless capabilities all worked together to do something truly innovative.
The video conference was streamed live, from Google+, in front of 600 viewers. Its started out with members of the Google Team jumping out of a plane, then after landing, passing the glasses on to extreme cyclists. After landing an amazing flip-jump off a rooftop they passed on the glasses, still filming the action, to rappellers who hopped down the sound of the Moscone Center. The presentation ended with the bikers bringing the glasses on stage to Sergey Brin, who was presenting the new tech.
Quite a spectacular show was more than enough to give everyone a taste of what Consumers can comes to expect in a couple years. Everyone at the event was offered the opportunity to be the first to own a pair of glasses for $1,500 which should ship as early as next year.
The technology behind the light-weight eyewear is intended to free people from their smartphones, so they can spend less time crashing into people and more time absorbing information. I guess you could also use them to be some sort of creep and no one would know you were filming a video and taking a picture with them, it would just look like your were adjusting your glasses. I’m sure there a great many positive and nefarious uses for such things, but they certainly are a sign of the times and of what’s yet to come.

Read “Earth” by David Brin. He has more predictions that have come true in that one book than Nostradamus had in his life. And these glasses are right there, too.
