E3 has been a wave of total excitement for gamers this year and just like every other year, the new games are creating the most buzz. I for one like Microsoft Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, but will occasionally play the Nintendo Wii. I have found that games for the Wii are not fit to my age or “gamer” group. I love Mario Kart, don’t get me wrong, but I also would like to see more games with less of a “child” feel to them. Games like Mario Party are alright when you are playing with friends and I have found games like Top Spin to be lacking just those couple things to make it really great!
This year at the E3 event, Nintendo rolled out some major announcements and two of them were about games the company hopes will bring some buzz to the new Wii U console. The console, which was demoed at the event, will be ready to ship later this year, most likely just in time for holiday shopping. Nintendo is trying very hard to get gamers back as Xbox 360 and PS3 take off to the races with hit franchises like Halo and Call of Duty. Although, just about any game with Mario or Zelda included is likely to do some good for the struggling console maker.
The main concept behind the Wii U is that gamers will be able to play simultaneously on a television as well as a screen positioned on the Wii U controller itself. The controller might resemble some sort of iPad like device, according to Nintendo, but I don’t think it resembles an iPad at all. A game designer at Nintendo said that “in order to be the central device in the living room, we couldn’t be dependent on the television.” According to online sources it seemed the crowd was a little more excited to hear about games that are coming to the Wii U console.
Games like Super Mario Bros. U and Pikmin 3 were mentioned. Pikmin 3 is a game that allows players to control an army of miniature creatures. We all know and remember very well what it is like to play every single one of the Super Mario Bros. games, so that should automatically be some fun. Nintendo Land was another game mentioned during the event. The Wii U console also comes with a social network called MiiVerse in which players can connect with friends and communicate using their cartoon-like Mii characters.
The Nintendo Wii console has lost some steam since it launched back in 2006 with the sales peaking in 2009 and slowly falling each year since. The company is really working hard to gain some of that market share it lost to the Xbox 360 and PS3 audience.
