Sony takes some time to talk about new games at E3

John Sukowaty 05 Jun

Yesterday, Microsoft had their 90 minute press conference, Nintendo went ahead with mention of a new controller and today we got to see that Sony wanted to talk about games, just games.  I love to play games and I’m a gadget guy all around, but when a company can give me more reasons to keep an eye on the games to be released, I am all ears.  The Sony PlayStation 3 is one of the sweetest gaming systems out there and at the E3 event, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America said that Sony’s wish “for all of you is that you never stop playing”.

Well, if we stopped playing it would be bad for business, so why wouldn’t Sony wish that for us?  While Microsoft talked more about mobile than gaming, Sony did the exact opposite and talked about console titles: God of War: Ascension, Uncharted 3 and a new game called The Last of Us.  God of War: Ascension looks to be another game where you can smash buttons until the gore gets old and The Last of Us is more of a survival story in a city overrun by mutants.  I personally like the “survival story” type of games as they usually leave the quality of the game up to my own choices.  The games usually have more than one way of being played rather than just one “cookie cutter” way to get to the end.

We all know what games we like and judging by the games that are coming out with sequels, Sony also knows.  Nintendo is most famous for releasing games with sequels and long standing franchises and now Sony is taking a page from that book.  A new game, called PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale was announced and is an arena game that follows along the same lines as Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros., but with characters from Sony.

I thought it was a little weird that Sony did not want to talk about things like televisions or blu-ray players, since the company makes those too.  The PlayStation Move, the motion activated gaming similar to Kinect and the Wii, was mentioned briefly.  Apparently, over 250 games are supported, which I would have doubted if a Sony official wasn’t the one saying it, but there was little talk about the games specifically.  It looks like the PlayStation 3 owners will be getting plenty of games to keep the gaming console from getting dusty.
