In the wake of Doublefine’s record breaking success in crowd-sourced funding, it seems like every developer is turning to Kickstarter in order to get their games made. But don’t group Stoic Studio’s The Banner Saga in with the rest of the bandwagon jumpers. If this game ends up playing as well as it looks, then it’ll definitely be worth your time and donations.
The hand drawn, tactical RPG looks absolutely beautiful, looking like a cross between Samurai Jack and Odin Sphere, and obviously, animation that carefully crafted isn’t cheap. Currently, The Banner Saga’s Kickstarter is already at $44,000 dollars, and they’re almost halfway to their goal of $100k. If the look of the game isn’t enough to get you excited, perhaps Stoic Studio’s pedigree will — the dev team is comprised of former Bioware employees, including staff who worked on The Old Republic.
Now, obviously, The Banner Saga is a much different beast than Bioware’s flagship MMO, but the game definitely looks like it has the potential to be as entertaining as the dev team’s previous, bigger budget work. I’m a sucker for when proven developers decide to take on riskier, original projects like this, and regardless of whether you decide to donate to Stoic Studios or not, The Banner Saga is certainly worth keeping an eye on.
