Unless you just now figured out how to use the Internet, the current My Little Pony series produced by Lauren Faust has a massive fandom despite the fact that the show is aimed at school-age girls. One team known as Mane 6 has been working on a fighting game based on the series, subtitled Fighting is Magic.
Yes I’m writing an article on a My Little Pony fangame. For a good while, Mane 6 has been developing the fighting game, and so far it looks pretty good, well drawn and well composed at that. The style of what has been seen thus far is accurate and faithful to the art style used in the show. What’s with that raised eyebrow you have?
The game will play like your standard fighting game, beat down your opponent with combos, get the special meter up, and take off chunks of their HP with a finishing move once you get sick of them. Standard stuff. The currently confirmed characters of the game are the central cast, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash. The team behind the game have said that they plan for 11 additional characters as free DLC after the game is released. Considering the size of the “named” cast, this could be very well anyone with a speaking part like Zecora, Cheerilee, Princess Luna, the Cutie Mark Crusaders… hey why are you giving me that look?
I don’t see how you can have a fighting game with a story mode between six ponies, but there may be boss fights against non-playable characters, like the Ursa Minor, the red dragon, Nightmare Moon, and other antagonists from the series. Stop giggling at me!
They did say they would have at least one non-pony character however. Could be Spike, Zecora (assuming you don’t count zebras as ponies), or the Buffalo chief from the episode Over a Barrel… why are you looking at me like that?
The game has voice actors for each of the characters, and music composed by the electronica artists WherewolfTherewolf, and RainbowCrash88. This is not to say that the music will be purely techno and electronica, as they have both proven themselves as being skilled composers of quite a few genres. Techno and electronica happen to be one of their specialties. The soundtrack will be original and inspired by the compositions of Daniel Ingram who did the songs for the show. Some of the tracks such as Twilight’s theme appear to be previous show-inspired compositions by the aforementioned WherewolfTherewolf.
Kinda odd to have a fighting game based on a show with no physical violence, with most situations being solved through nonviolent means, but I’m still looking forward to it. Everyone wants to beat up Gilda, don’t they?
