Since day one, the name “Wii-U” has been ridiculed. If you weren’t groaning over the fact that Nintendo just lazily slapped a “U” at the end of an already criticized console name, you were one of the people making references to Ling from Kung Pow! Enter the Fist. After much debate, it looks like Nintendo agrees — the name (probably) won’t work.
The biggest reason for these changes? Consumer confusion. Reports from CVG claim that Nintendo is considering the switch because of current confusion over the 3DS and original Nintendo DS handhelds.
Basically, there are probably grandparents going to the game store and asking a clerk for “three Nintendo DS,” and that sort of thing. Sure, the poor kid won’t get a shot at damaging their retinas, but they could at least resell the other two DS consoles for some wicked trade-in credit. Lord forbid we have the same individuals returning in the future, and buying the kid a Wii-U game for their outdated Wii system.
