A tweet from Eat Sleep Play, Inc made a very simple statement that wasted none of the 140 letters each Tweet is allowed to have: “Twisted Metal – GOLD!”, that’s right, it will be coming out sometime in February after a good amount of development time.
If you’re not familiar with the Twisted Metal series, it started on the PSX in 1995, it is a vehicular combat game that can be compared to Destruction Derby and Wipeout in their gameplay. The weapons range from machine guns to literal nuclear explosions, allowing for all sorts of mayhem on the field. If you have played Vigilante 8, that is also a good example of the genre.
The main theme of the game involves people hosting the titular Twisted Metal tournament, and the winner can have any wish they desire granted by the hosts, who are able to warp reality to the extent they want. However, the games involve significant amounts of black humor, so you can imagine where that concept goes, pretty much making the entire tournament for the entertainment for the hosts.
The series’ overall style of gameplay hasn’t changed, but it has been bounced around various development teams making the quality of them varied.
Buyers of the first batch of Twisted Metal’s PS3 release will get a free voucher that allows them to download Twisted Metal: Black for free. However this version lacks the multiplayer function that was in a rerelease.
Twisted Metal 2012 is thought to be a reboot of the series, having several new characters, but not forgetting the killer clown mascot of the series, Sweet Tooth, who has graced the cover of every Twisted Metal game to date. There have been multiple hints as to what features and game modes will be included in Twisted Metal 2012, but very little is concrete.
