2012 marks a big milestone for Capcom’s two most iconic franchises, as both Street Fighter and Mega Man turn 25.
While Capcom hasn’t divulged any details regarding what exactly they’re going to do to celebrate this momentous occasion, they did release this teaser image regarding their upcoming Street Fighter celebration:
Street Fighter officially turns 25 on August 30th, and I’m not sure what Capcom could release to mark the occassion: both Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike have already recieved HD re-releases, and all of the Street Fighter Alpha games are still readily available in a collected Anthology form on PS2.
Mega Man is also turning 25 this year, though Capcom is keeping the birthday of their once-mascot relatively low-key: Capcom themselves haven’t even made mention of any events or releases based around the Blue Bomber this year, but fans recently discovered some logos hidden within the recent iPhone re-release of Mega Man X that hint that Capcom hasn’t forgotten their robot hero entirely:
After cancelling Mega Man Legends 3 last year and announcing that they currently have no plans to develop any further Mega Man titles, many Mega Man fans have been critical of Capcom’s handling of the franchise. As one of those fans I can’t say I’m happy with Capcom either, but giving Mega Man the 25th Anniversary celebration he deserves (and y’know, maybe a new game,) might just be enough to win over fans who swore to never buy a Capcom game again after they abruptly pulled the plug on Legends 3.
