Fans of the classic PC strategy game series X-COM tore through their moo-moo’s in a fit of violent nerd rage when 2K Marin, the developers of Bioshock 2 (which I actually strangely preferred over the original, by the way,) announced that they were making a new X-COM, and that it was going to be an FPS/Adventure hybrid in the style of Bioshock. Well, fanboys, you can put down your pitchforks, because in addition to 2K Marin’s X-COM shooter, Firaxis Games (the developers behind the Civilization series) announced today that they’re creating another X-COM sequel, and this one stays true to the series’ turn-based strategy tradition.
Firaxis’s X-COM: Enemy Unknown will have turn-based, strategic combat, but will apparently incorporate some real-time elements. The developers are promising alterable, fully destructible environments, as well as equipment that improves as you progress through the game.
X-COM: The Enemy Within is set to be released on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC this Fall. Further details about the game are set to be unveiled in this month’s issue of Game Informer magazine, which should be mailed out to subscribers within a week or two.
