The PlayStation Vita launched on the 17th in Japan and within just 2 days Enterbrain reports has recorded 321,407 Vita consoles sold on December 17th and 18th. To put that in perspective of other handhelds that have come out in the past — The Japanese launch of the 3DS had 371,326 units sold within the first two days but then sales dropped until the price cut in August but Enterbrain is estimating that the Vita will steam ahead and reach 1.4 million sales the first week.
The first PSP, which launched in 2004 and then went on to become on of the country’s best-selling consoles, had sold around 166,000 units just on the first day and unfortunately second say sales are not available.
As a last little note, it’s not worth it to purchase the unit from Japan unless you can read Japanese and understand their games perfectly .. of course if you have around $1000 to spend I guess you could risk it anyways but I’d wait until the North American launch.

Apparently so.. by what the numbers they are providing are showing. My only wonder is… just how will this Vita be affected by the new news by OnLive gaming service? It says it will be distributing a free app that allows one to play all games from OnLive (batman arkham city, etc) on a Smartphone or Tablet device. Not only that… but is cross platform servicing- meaning you can play on console, switch to tablet and continue, and then t phone and continue… the same game.

OnLive is still in its infancy so I doubt it would consume a large portion of the handheld gaming market, at least not yet, especially when it means carrying around a Bluetooth controller if you want to enjoy the portable experience, which would likely be riddled with lag if you were not on wifi.
