Geek Girl Gift Guide: Christmas 2011 Edition

Geek Girl Gift Guide: Christmas 2011 Edition

Angela Min 08 Dec

It’s that time of year again and you are probably wondering to yourself, why the heck did I wait so long to get her a present? Again. You get her another ugly sweater or a game that you want to play, you may get strangled in your sleep. No, I’m just kidding. Unless she’s a sociopath.. Then you may have other problems besides Christmas presents… Anyway, I am going to help you out a little, let you know what are some cool little gifts that she is sure to love because it speaks to her nerdy little heart.

10. 12 Hole Ocarina From Legend of Zelda

Musical instruments are pretty sweet gifts to receive. A musical instrument from one of the largest video game franchises is just plain awesome. Our Senior Editor, Chris, gave one to his lovely fiancee and she is nearly a master with it after less than a year. It comes with a companion booklet that gives you a quick lesson on how to play it and feel like Link.

Disclaimer: Learning to play the ocarina will not give her the ability to travel between temples, change the time of day or make it rain.

9. Doctor Who TARDIS USB Hub

The TARDIS. The Doctor’s favorite mode of traveling through space. It can now be her data’s favorite way of transporting into her computer. Woah, mind blown.

8. Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey

If your girlfriend is anything like me, she cried a little bit when the end credits for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 rolled. It was the end of an era and soon, saying “expelliarmus” will just get you some pitiful looks from onlookers. Fortunately, that time hasn’t come yet and people are still falling in love all over again with the Boy Who Lived. His legacy will live on in the books and in the movies. With the ending of movie franchise comes this fantastic book that has all the pictures from the decade long saga we all came to love. I promise, she will love it with her entire nerdy little heart.

7. DC Mimobot USB Flash Drive

I love Mimobots. They make owning a USB much more adorable. Not that all girls are so into cutesy things, but personalized USB drives are awesome. You can gift them to just about any gender and they will love it. I bought my Harley Quinn one at San Diego Comic Con ’11. It was supposed to be a SDCC exclusive, but with the internet, I suppose exclusive doesn’t actually mean much. You can get the same one I bought on Amazon.

6. Star Trek Enterprise Pizza Cutter

Pizza is universal really. Every culture has it in their own variation and I have yet to meet one person that has told me they hated pizza. Pizza is something that the hardcore vegans and carnivores can agree on. What the pizza is made up of is an entirely different story. However, what you cut your pizza with can also be universally awesome, just like pizza. If she orders in pizza though, it can just be a super neat kitchen appliance to have around. Just try not to buy her too many kitchen items though. She might beat you due to your insensitive implication of her role as a female. Just saying.

5. Kindle Fire

Everyone and their mother owns a tablet now. Tablets make traveling more enjoyable and has even started to make the laptop obsolete. It may not have all the benefits and functions as a laptop, but it allows you to play games, read books, surf the web, and email to your heart’s content. For a long time, a affordable tablet meant getting something that was subpar at best. With that being said, I would like to introduce you to the Kindle Fire, the Android tablet of your wallet’s dreams. At just under $200, it’s perfect for your lady.

4. The Sandman by Neil Gaiman

He’s been my favorite writer for years, and he is also the author of my favorite comic book series: The Sandman. Ten graphic novels that features the main protagonist Dream, a personification of sorts of dreams. I would summarize the comics for you here, but I just couldn’t do it justice. It’s absolutely amazing and I guarantee that your lady will also love it. It is not directly mainly to a female audience, but I am a female and I love it, so I decided to just add it here. If you think you have heard of Neil Gaiman before, you are probably right. Two of his works have become major motion pictures (Coraline and Stardust) and he’s made appearances in some of your favorite shows (Arthur, The Simpsons, The Guild). He’s kind of a big deal, and if you gift her with this series, you’ll be a big deal too, just by association.

3. Batman Snuggie

The Snuggie is kind of a brilliant invention. It is basically a reverse robe, but it’s long so it can cover your feet, and wider to accommodate to the larger frame we are all starting to get from gaming too much (seriously guys, you need to go outside and get some fresh air). If you’re using a Snuggie for more than four hours a day, chances are, you aren’t exercising. That’s ok though, cause now you can look like Batman and his six-pack abs. So why get it for her? It’s Batman, and girl needs her Snuggie too.

2. Nintendo 3DS: Limited Edition (with The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D)

The 3DS didn’t have a good start on its launch. This is actually good news for you because that means you can get the 3DS now for less than $200. With so many more amazing titles that will be released soon, it’s about time to get her a nice one. So why the Zelda one? It’s classy looking, and it comes with one of the best 3DS games out there: Ocarina of Time.

1. DC Converse

Every nerd owns a pair of converse. It’s like a nerd girl’s shoe staple and typically we own more than one pair. So what isn’t to love about DC superheroes/supervillians on Converse? I own three of them, and I love them like they are my children. That I wear on my feet and walk on… Maybe that was a bad metaphor, but that shouldn’t deter you from buying a pair of his and her Batman Converse (or The Flash, whatever floats your boat really).
