In a recent interview with a European gaming site, Zelda series produced Eiji Aonuma confirmed that another Legend of Zelda game is already well into development for the 3DS. While Aonuma was coy when it came to any concrete details regarding the game, he did say that the game will be completely different than the previous DS Zelda’s and will use the system’s 3D screens in a way that will “have meaning,” though he didn’t elaborate on what he meant by that.
Aonuma also went on to state that he and series creator Shigeru Miyamoto are currently discussing the possibility of a Majora’s Mask remake for the system, though he added that if they do decide to go ahead with a remake of the N64 cult classic, it likely won’t be for sometime, adding that the new 3DS Zelda mentioned earlier will likely come out before any possible Majora’s Mask remake, stating that he’d prefer to put a bit of time between the recent release of the Ocarina of Time for 3DS and any other possible Zelda remakes.
While the news that the Majora’s Mask remake is still probably a long ways off (if it’ll happen at all,) is disappointing, I’m glad to hear that an entirely new Zelda is in the works for the 3DS. With early reviews and features from the main stream press (who already have final copies of the game) all saying that Skyward Sword is a surprisingly different, new direction for the series, perhaps the 3DS will be the new home to a more “traditional” Zelda experience? Or perhaps it’ll be another experimental entry that’ll utilize the 3DS’s unique features, much like the original DS Zeldas were designed around the touchscreen. Whatever the case, Zelda is one of Nintendo’s premiere money makers, and they’re sure to reveal more about this mysterious new entry in the series after Skyward Sword is released in just a few short weeks.

I would much rather have a new, quality Zelda game for the 3DS than another remake, so this is very exciting news.
