Project Zomboid, a zombie survival RPG that was in the works by an indie group is sadly, no more. The laptops that contained the most up-to-date versions of the code have been stolen, and are likely gone for good. The recent burglary of Lemmy and Binky’s home caused the destruction of the entire project. The thieves took the laptops, and a credit card.
There were no external backups of the source code for several months, online, on a USB drive, or otherwise, showing quite a significant degree of incompetence on their part but nobody expects data loss to involve something being stolen straight out of your own house.
However, the internet is calling shenanigans, claiming that the whole thing is fishy, and that one of his deleted tweets said that one of the laptops containing the update was less than a week old. His entire Twitter account has been deleted, and there may be lawsuits against him in the future and subpoenas against Twitter to have them loot any archives they have. Because of people calling him a con artist and that the holes in his story made him suspicious, and Binky made a rather strongly-worded blog post.
“Oh no wait, but we’re selling you a game therefore we must be professional. Who says? Why? If we wanted to be professionals we’d never have left our jobs in the first place. What we actually want to do is make a game which we’re proud of and not be pre-occupied by maintaining a decorum on the internet. Don’t want to read our actual personal thoughts on shit? Don’t read our personal thoughts on shit using Twitter.
Don’t feel comfortable throwing money at an indie dev who replies to insults with insults back? Don’t throw money at that sort of indie dev. It’s really terribly simple.”
The contents of the Twitter account grew increasingly brutal over time, his anger clearly showing at how everyone was reacting to the loss of the code.
To all those reddit arseholes. You haven’t got nothing you got the game stop saying you got nothing
And it was a fiver jesus christ! And reactionary freaking out aside we’re obviously carrying on.
Well fuck em had most traumatic night of my life don’t need being called a crook into the bargain
I’m also drunk which I think you can agree is justified right now
Call me a con artist if u want i’ll take ur fucjing money and jump out a fucking window
It’s such a shame it turned out like this. I’m not making any comment on whenever he decided to take the money and run or not since that would be unprofessional, but everyone who jumped on this man has clearly not had his house broken into in his entire life. It’s a very stressful and traumatic experience, and I hope that this project can continue, I was really looking foward to it. Yes he was irresponsible, but until courts say otherwise nobody has the right to call him a thief
