Mortal Kombat has sold three million copies total, an impressive number netting it very sweet profits, and reception from fans and critics alike has been overwhelmingly positive. Prior to the game’s release, Ed Boon said multiple times they want to be aggressive with DLC and have delivered on that. Their DLC started with Skarlet who was a rumored glitch character in Mortal Kombat 2, Kenshi from Deadly Alliance, Rain from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and the horror movie cameo Freddy Kruger. All at $4.99 each, they were quite steep in price but were a success.
Ed had said “DLC for MK9 was huge! Certainly better than I expected! Hope you can understand we’re not allowed to share actual numbers. But it was BIG! From the beginning we always planned to release 4 characters. We wanted NEW, RETURNING and an unexpected one for the last.”
Even though fans likely have plenty of characters on their lists for returns and cameos, Ed Boon has said “Again, I hate to use the word never. But we are currently not working on additional DLC for MK.”
When asked about a second Klassic Skins Pack, Friendships, and more story content, his replies simply denied any plans for them, and Ed Boon is the word of God on Mortal Kombat.
So it looks like the latest MK entry isn’t going to be getting any new content any time soon, if at all. There might be a nice surprise at some point since the MK team can be funny like that. Skarlet and Ermac both started as rumors and glitches and fully ascended to existence.
