The Magical Girl series, which takes the typical bright and cheerful image conjured by Magical Girl anime like Cardcaptor Sakura and Cyberteam in Akihabara and turns it into a dark and brutal deconstruction of the genre, is getting a PSP game based on the anime.
The game will be a dungeon crawler with the head writer of the anime, Gen Urobochi, who has a hand in adaptions of Fate/Zero and is the scenario writer of the lovecraftian tragedy-horror visual novel Saya no Uta. The animation studio for the anime, Shaft, will be doing the animated cut scenes.
If you’re not familiar with Puella Magi Madoka Magica, it starts off as your typical Magical Girl anime. A young teenaged girl finds a cute creature named Kyubey, who is under constant assault from another girl who wants him dead. Those who make a contract with Kyubey have any wish he is capable of granting fulfilled, but in exchange, they have to become a Magical Girl and fight Witches. I wont spoil anything, but the story of Madoka Magica is incredibly dark and twisted, and it only gets more twisted as it continues.
The news comes from a recent issue of the Japanese magazine Dengeki Playstation, confirming that Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable will be released in March of next year, published by Bandai. The gameplay will be like a turn-based roguelike, and the story will be an adaption of the original anime with some new content including a new Witch the girls must overcome.
Two editions of the game will be released, a standard and pre-order limited edition. The limited edition will include a figurine of Madoka, a blu-ray, a Kyubey pouch, handkerchief from a specific scene, illustration collection, and some other nice goodies.

Is this a Japan-only game or will it be localized?

Not certain, but Madoka Magica is a really popular anime among the community. Aniplex got a hold of it at some point in the past so there is a pretty fair chance it would get released in the US if it sells well.
