In the grittier FPS games like Rainbow Six, explosives are incredibly effective, being something that turn a gunfight into Heaven or Hell. A common complaint about Call of Duty’s multiplayer is that explosives are incredibly overpowered and also gamebreaking and some gamers were worried that the issue would persist into Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer.
However, Robert Bowling, also called FourZeroTwo, has said this on explosives on his twitter account in response to another user. “In Multiplayer, its all about you and your gun, plus explosives have been lowered in damage and new anti-explosive equipment added.”
The most overpowered thing in most FPSs and in online games in general are the most exploited. Knowledge is power but any idiot with a grenade launcher will ruin your day faster than you can ruin his. Explosives get a nerf, and you also have more anti-explosive equipment which has not been disclosed as of yet so we’ll have to find something else to claim is overpowered. I’m learning towards headshots. It could be something that prevents them from detonating (fat chance in a realistic game) or something that sharply reduces the already-nerfed damage.
Balance is crucial for fair play in multiplayer, and overpowered tactics are considered unsportsmanlike. However, in online gaming, all people will care about is winning at any cost. That’s just how things are, no matter how dirty the tactic.
Now, onto the killsteak system. Most FPS multiplayer games have something for players who make multiple kills in a row, with phrases like “RAMPAGE!” and “UNSTOPPABLE!”, but Modern Warfare allows for things like nuclear strikes if you get enough kills in a row (and other neat things if you suck and die multiple times in a row). In Modern Warfare 3, your killstreak is not based soley on how many kills you get, but rather how many points you get. You don’t have to kill dozens to be a valuable player, as actions like healing an ally or such contribute greatly. This will encourage far more tactical gameplay, and it means that a nuclear strike or such can show up out of absolutely nowhere. Getting a killstreak based on your overall performance is far better than it being simply about your kills.
