The independent group Epifanica are working on a sidescroller with RPG and Platform elements called The Light of the Darkness. The setting of the game has its own unique mythology and new setting that has been worked on and fleshed out for a while. Their site says they are going for a retro appeal for the gameplay along with an open world, but with the visuals expected of modern games.
Castlevania, Muramasa, and Odin Sphere are all cited as inspiration for what they are trying to develop, a game that has artistic value and will be remembered for that. The art style of series’ such as Castlevania is very well known, and Odin Sphere has a beautiful style to it that is visually impressive, and this game has a very notable style.
The protagonist of the game is capable of flight, swordplay, and magic. The protagonist appears as an angel-like being with excellent agility and strength he uses to overcome and vanquish obstacles in his path. From the trailer on this article, the animations are fluid and artistic style of the game is unique.
As an indie group, they don’t have an awful lot of funding, so they are giving out some very nice perks to those who give a significant contribution to the project’s Kickstarter page. This includes the game itself once it’s completed, your name and likeness in the game, mention in the credits, and some very nice physical items including a map of the world.
This looks to be an extremely unique title with some very nice promises. I personally am a fan of side-scrolling games like Metroid and Castlevania, and I also love things with very distinctive art styles and unique settings. Hopefully this can get off the ground.
