Capcom announced today that the long awaited Mega Man Legends 3 for 3DS is no longer in development. In related news, Capcom also announced that they hate you and have dedicated themselves to crushing your hopes and dreams.
Mega Man Legends 3 was to be the conclusion to the fan-favorite trilogy that began on the PS1; while the games recieved a mixed reception at the time of it’s release, it has since gone on to become a cult classic, lauded for it’s heartfelt storytelling and innovative gameplay elements (1up.com has an excellent retrospective on the game). The second game in the series (and now, presumably the last) ended on a cliffhanger, and eager fans have been anticipating the next chapter in the story for about a decade now… Sadly, like other cult-favorite Shenmue, it seems like fans will never know what happens to protagonist Rock Volnutt and his friends.
Capcom announced the news via their Capcom Unity blog, but gave no concrete reasons for the cancellation. Earlier interviews with Capcom reps revealed that the company never had much confidence in the project, (erroneously) believing that Mega Man was unpopular in the West. It’s a sad day for fans of one of gaming’s most iconic characters, leaving those who were anticipating this game both baffled and angry at Capcom’s obviously out of touch views on the gaming market.
