YouTube user NotEntirelySure was able to set a record on the classic game Super Mario Bros., completing the game in eight minutes (excluding waiting for the timer to run out), with no deaths deaths and a score of 600.
The breakdown of his score is simple.
Level 1-1 – 100pts end stage bonus.
Level 4-1 – 100pts end stage bonus. (warp tubes are awesome)
Level 8-1 – 100pts for a goomba that couldn’t be avoided and 100pts end stage bonus.
Level 8-2 – 100pts end stage bonus.
Level 8-3 – 100pts end stage bonus.
Theoretically, a minimum score of 500 points is possible if someone could possibly get through stage 8-1 without having to kill the goomba. If you watch the video, you’ll see he had to jump off the Goomba to avoid the coins which are worth 200 each if I recall. The amount of precision the wall jump trick would need however is barely within human ability.
Regardless this is an impressive feat. Having to not just avoid enemies, but avoid killing them takes an extreme amount of skill and practice. A single second can easily ruin an entire attempt right there or net you a game-over. I should try and do a Low Score Run on Touhou 7 sometime. Only problem is that will involve timing out minute to minute-and-a-half barrages of nigh-unavoidable danmaku.
The absolute minimum of 500 points is still up for grabs. Any takers want to do it without cheating?
