Yuji Naka and Takashi Iizuka, both very prestigious men in the gaming industry, were interviewed by the staff of a NiGHTS fansite, namely NiGHTSintoDreams.com. You can read the basic transcript on this page here.
The highlights of the interview however, are hints that another NiGHTS game might be made. The previous entry to the series on the wii was well-recieved by those that played it, and was given solid review scores. Iizuka and Naka talked about the world of NiGHTS and made this small snippit.
Naka: In the NiGHTS world there is only five Ideya. There were various other concepts and elements that didn’t make it into the final product.
Iizuka: But they are still saved for another project.
This might be hinting at another game in the NiGHTS series, or at least set in the same universe or general setting. The previous entry was released in America back in 2007. Not too long ago, but the series proper started on the Sega Saturn back in 1996 when the Playstation was dominating the market for all it was worth.
I only played the original NiGHTS back on my Uncle’s Sega Saturn years ago, but I remember enjoying the game’s graphics and music. Between releases, the androgynous titular NiGHTS has only made cameos in games, which is kind of sad really, demoted to extra. Well this gives us something to look forward to for next year, bringing back some old icons in gaming is a very welcome thing among all gamers. Very few of them from the early 90s and later have persisted as long as iconic symbols like Sonic and Mario have.
