Trade insiders are expecting Sony to announce a significant price drop at Gamescom in August, bringing the PS3 price down to £200. The trade magazine MCV however have speculated that stores will go as low as £179.99 For the curious, 200 british pounds is just above $300. The PS3 is sold in the US at prices ranging from $270 to $320 for the COD:BO pack to put it into comparison for people not in the UK.
It’s just speculation and can change at any time Sony wills it, if they’re willing it at all. An analyst named Nick Parker claims that a pricetag of £200 allows Sony to further decrease the price if they need to be a bit more competitive in the market. The XBox 360 sells for around £140 according to some friends of mine in the UK, and against Microsoft’s theoretically infinite funds, is incredibly hard to compete with.
The British market for software has been on a rather sharp decline, but it’s hoped that a reduction in the price of a popular console will give it a bit of a kick start. I’m not doubting them but being a native Brit, I can tell you we can be a bit stingy with our money and we always want value for our money.
