The Russian-based developer behind Death Track: Resurrection and Adrenaline has announced that they will be releasing an MMO based around dogfights, World of Planes. World of Planes is based around historical warfare of anarchy in the sky with missiles and machine guns, allowing players to pilot hundreds of historically-accurate planes, having both above-ground and above-sea missions.
Gaijin Entertainment has confirmed that World of Planes will be free to play, and will have painstaking recreations of World War II combat zones. Selectable planes come from the major powers in the war against the Nazis, including the USSR, Britain, Japan, Germany, and the USA.
The damage mechanics in the game will also be realistic, based on the type of weapon used and how it hit you. A shell from a tank could either rip a wing off or completely ruin your engine as you come crashing to the ground.
In short, World of Planes is a dogfighting simulator, and it looks bloody fantastic. High quality graphics, massive amounts of actual skill involved, and realistic mass-warfare. This could be a Game of the Year candidate easily. Whenever it’s focused purely on air combat or will also allow for ground-based shooting is unknown, but someone can be seen parachuting in one of the screenshots so it’s possible.
The release date is currently know, but it will be coming out on PC and mac.

A game like this already exists. It’s called Aces High, by HiTech Creations (only game they make I think). It’s pretty awesome.
