Despite its clearly superior technology, some very highly anticipated titles, and fantastic innovation that has come to be expected from Nintendo in the previous decade (as well as backwards compatibility), the DS is miraculously outselling the 3DS by a significant margin.
NPD Group’s numbers showed that the sales of Nintendo’s hardware totals exceed 620,000 for the month of April. 257,000 of those being the Nintendo DS, and 197,000 of those being the 3DS.
The finger is being pointed at the large amount of games already available on the DS, but the fact that the 3DS is perfectly backwards compatible with the DS (sans GBA games) makes this a moot point. Also being blamed are concerns of eyestrain and headaches that are manifesting in people who are prone to dizzyness from using the 3D, which is a suprising amount of people.
Regardless, the 3DS is having amazing sales despite the new technology and the rather high price tag. I’m certain they will pick up very sharply and overtake the DS once some of the more anticipated titles are on the shelves of the local stores.
