GOG.com has made a significant change to their privacy policy by no longer tracking your location based on IP. Geo-IP is not without its issues, having problems including giving completely false data, being spoofable, inaccurate, and generally an unreliable way to tell someone’s location.
As of now, geo-IP is simply no longer a factor when purchasing games on GOG. They’re simply leaving it up to the users and “trusting them” to put in their correct geographical data. They cite that they don’t want to take information they don’t need, and the only info they need is what country you’re purchasing from.
In truth behind all the talk, this means simply that someone who would get a cut version of a game (common in Germany and Australia) could set their region to the US or the UK and circumvent censorship laws without batting an eyelid. This is a very good move on GOGs part, eliminating more BS in the gaming industry and giving region-differences and game censorship a well-deserved sparta-kick to the groin.
