Sony doing their bit to clean up their names

Sony doing their bit to clean up their names

Rian Quenlin 01 May

A Sony press conference revealed that the industry giant plans to give free downloads of unidentified content and a free month of PlayStation Plus to all members, and an equal amount of time for the Qriocity service. They are doing this as an apology for the hacking and the downtime of two weeks. In addition, they will be cooperating with government agencies who are investigating the data leak and finding out where the stolen credit info went.

Speaking of the stolen credit cards, turns out that a lot of the accounts were alternate accounts for whatever reason, the estimation of stolen credit cards is now around ten million. Far lower than what it was previously. Sony is doing everything to step up their security in addition. New firewalls, new physical data centers, and a firmware update for the PS3 that will force all users to change the password.

They are apparently also considering covering the costs of those who replaced their credit cards, keyword being considering. Nothing is known about the compensation they’ll be giving out, but it’s estimated at “a few thousand yen”, so it may be up to $40 US.

It’s rare for companies to give the users compensation for downtime and screwups. Only other example I can name is Riot Games giving most of their League of Legends users 350 Riot Points because of extended downtime. Maybe this will become a common practice.

meh, i don’t really care about a free month of ps+ because I’ve see what they offer and most of the free games for ps+ are really lame

i would prefer that sony gave us the chance to pick one game (any game we want) from the store (maybe up to $15 value) and download it for free, redeemable once per user. That way we could get something we really like and not a lame cheap choice by Sony
