Beyond the Labyrinth for the 3DS

Beyond the Labyrinth for the 3DS

Rian Quenlin 29 Apr

Konami and Tri-Ace, two well-known companies behind several fantastic games are working on a 3DS title named Beyond the Labyrinth.

The Japanese gaming news source Famitsu has released numerous screenshots of the upcoming RPG Adventure game, which can be found on their website.

A rough translation of the article follows.

“Konami and Tri-Ace’s second collaborative project, “Beyond the Labyrinth”. Director Takayuki Suguro is working on this 3D Dungeon RPG. However, this information is all that is known. Little was published outside of screenshots of the main game, and we will have to wait for more details and further news.

Girl standing in the dungeon
The girl seen in the screenshots is very eye-catching. The girl standing in the titular Labyrinth could very well be the main character. What will be helping or directing her? At this stage, not much is known.

Details of this work and an interview with the producers by Gotanda-san will appear in Weekly Famitsu’s May 12th issue.”

Release date and price are still to be determined, but the game is estimated to be 60% complete, so it may come out in the summer.

Takayuki Suguro is the director of the project has been credited with the creation of Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Valkyrie Profile 2. Shingo Mukaitouge is developer of the wii title Elebits is the producer. It’s unlikely you’ll recognize Mukaitouge, but Suguro is a well-known name among Squaresoft fans.

I have to say that this game looks absolutely stunning. I’m predicting the gameplay will be like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, focusing on beautiful environments and obstacles that must be traversed and overcome with nothing more than the protagonist’s own skill.

From the screenshots, this is really showing off what the 3DS is capable of. The graphics and environments pictured are absolutely beautiful, and the girl is incredibly cute as well. The graphics themselves appear to have a subtle cel-shaded effect to them as can be seen in the image of the girl looking up a flight of stone steps, and are incredibly detailed.

Let me sum this up with details I’ve dug around for.

– Produced by Konami and Tri-Ace, headed by the director of Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story.
– RPG/Adventure title for the 3DS.
– Currently unnamed but talkative girl may or may not be the playable protagonist, but she is the focus of the story.
– Features ruins and mazes, whenever this is one massive dungeon or multiple different locations is not known.

Konami’s official teaser page has no information, but it does have a beautiful track that’s likely from the game itself, give it a listen.
