Over ten years have passed since Epic released the first Unreal engine that was built for the appropriately named Unreal game and it has been used many time by many developers in a vast variety of ways. It then evolved and became Unreal Engine 2 which relied on the popularity of the script language used in its architecture that made it easy to create mods for games built on the engine. It made its debut with America’s Army and was one of the first engines to implement rag doll physics. It was used in many titles on PC, XBox, Gamecube and PS2.
Finally came along the third iteration and is now ingrained in this generation of gaming, with many AAA games running on the engine such as Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of War, and Bulletstorm which are of course all in-house Epic games. Also worth mentioning are upcoming titles Batman: Arkham City, BioShock Infinite, Mass Effect 3 and Mortal Kombat to name a few.
Now Epic wants to show of the real power of the engine in the latest tech demo that reminds me very much of the latest Deus Ex title. Despite that it looks really impressive and I am looking forward to how far they can push the engine on this generation of consoles before we need Unreal Engine 4(which has been in development since 2003). With that in mind, check out the video and let us know what you think.
