PlatinumGames To Keep Developing New IPs

PlatinumGames To Keep Developing New IPs

Nick Hernandez 24 Oct

The release of Vanquish marked the end of the four-game publishing deal between Sega and PlatinumGames that also includes MadWorld, Bayonetta, and Infinite Space. Platinum’s executive director, Atsushi Inaba, discusses what may be next for the studio.

“When we created PlatinumGames, we of course talked to a lot of publishers, and Sega offered us the most freedom to develop games,” Inaba tells Develop. “I think the partnership has been great, and I’m really grateful for their support. For the future of our partnership, of course, it’s not something that we alone can decide,” Inaba continues. “Sega has its stance, and we have ours, but if Sega asks us to make something we might take the offer.”

Platinum has nothing “against the idea of making sequels,” Inaba says, however the studio would rather continue creating new properties. “So as a studio we would like to do both [new IP and sequels], but the whole point of PlatinumGames is to create our own IP, that’s what we do.”

With Bayonetta having been the most successful release for Platinum thus far selling over a million copies, it’s anyone’s guess whether we’ll see a sequel. Even though sales for the other three properties have been less-than-stellar, we certainly hope it doesn’t deter the developer from continuing to develop creative new properties.
