Phil Spencer, corporate vice president for Microsoft Game Studios, has expressed his opinion that Stereoscopic 3D is not ready for mainstream adoption yet and that the 3D version of Batman: Arkham Asylum was “more like a science experiment than something that’s going to go touch millions of people.”
“As an entertainment company, we’re trying to do things that millions of people can go enjoy today,” Spencer told CNN. “And for better or for worse, people just don’t really have TVs in their house right now that are going to do 3-D in a way that’s going to work.”
“A bunch of people sitting around the living room wearing $150 glasses — I’m just not sure that’s kind of mainstream today,” he explained. “Trying to get a bunch of people playing together in a room where not everybody sees the same thing … is kind of a weird disconnect to me.”
In a weird event following Spenser then praised Nintendo’s 3DS for not requiring users to wear 3D glasses.

I think 3D is just a stepping stone between HD and a fully submersive experience, almost like the things from “Avatar” or maybe “Gamer”, that will be pretty revolutionary, just i think i will enjoy 3D when it becomes the norm for gaming… i’ll say 3 years until every game on the market is 3D.

I think the lack of glasses free TVs available for consumers is a major barrier for many to adopt this technology. It will get there though, hopefully.
