If you’re one of those unlucky saps who bought Aliens Colonial Marines and hasn’t traded the game in or snapped the disc in half yet, here’s some good (citation needed) news: according to a leaked list of new PS3 trophies, Colonial Marines will soon be getting a single player, downloadable expansion, so you can extend your suffering beyond the content that’s already available on the disc.
The downloadable campaign is reportedly titled “Statis Interrupted.” The DLC chapter will feature 10 trophies, all of which appear to be story based. Sega has yet to announce any official details about Statis Interrupted, but the trophy titles suggest that the DLC will feature a return to the Sulaco and another battle with an alien Queen.
In case you were pleasantly unaware, Aliens Colonial Marines was developed by Gearbox (who also developed the much, much better Borderlands series,) and was published by Sega earlier this year, and was met with mostly negative reviews from critics and fans alike. Reception to the game was so poor that Sega and Gearbox are now facing litigation over the substandard quality of the game: a lawsuit filed against both companies says that both Sega and Gearbox willfully mislead consumers with demos at E3 and PAX that didn’t represent any of the actual content (or quality) of the final game.
It’s stupid to try and judge something before you actually play it yourself, but with that said, if Colonial Marines’ DLC is anything like the main game itself, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Then again, there’s always a chance that the Gearbox might have taken criticism of Colonial Marines to heart and might have substantially improved the game (or rather, actually developed it themselves instead of farming it out to other developers,) but given how little effort they put into the game originally, I doubt that’s happened.
