We’ve got our first look at Titanfall, the highly anctipated first game from Respawn Entertainment, the new studio headed up by Call of Duty co-creators Vince Zampella and Jason West.
Titanfall was revealed this morning when the July issue of Game Informer leaked online. NeoGAF poster “Cartman86” managed to download the digital version of the latest Game Informer to his tablet when the issue was mistakenly posted online early; the issue has since been removed from Google Play. According to the info we have now, Titanfall is a multiplayer-focused shooter that pits human foot soldiers against giant, deadly robots, which are the titular “Titans.” The human players will need to work together in order to outsmart and take down each massive robot, while the players on the Titans’ side can either program the Titans to fight alongside them or they can climb in and take manual control of the Titans themselves.
The game will reportedly be exclusive to Microsoft platforms (Xbox One, Windows 8, and Xbox 360,) and the Xbox One and PC versions of the game will reportedly use Microsoft’s cloud network to handle dedicated servers and the computations needed for the game’s complex physics and AI. The game will be published by EA.
The Xbox One has been the subject to a lot of negative press lately, but if Titanfall manages to live up to its potential, this could be the killer-app the system needs to silence all its naysayers. I’m not a huge fan of Call of Duty or most FPS’s in general, but Titanfall’s unique and interesting spin on the genre has piqued my interest. Microsoft and Respawn Entertainment will undoubtedly make Titanfall one of the centerpieces of the Xbox One’s E3 line-up, so expect to hear more details about the game then.
