Peter Molyneux’s “Curiosity” cube unraveled, “life changing” secret revealed

Peter Molyneux’s “Curiosity” cube unraveled, “life changing” secret revealed

Michael Lacerna 26 May

For the last few months, gamers have been chipping away at the titular cube in Peter Molyneux’s “Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube?” Molyneux promised that the secret contained within the cube would be “amazing” and “life changing,” and well… let’s just say that Molyneux’s reputation for over promising and under delivering remains intact.

“Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube?” launched last November. The “game” requires players to tap their iOS or Android device screen repeatedly in order to wear down the layers of the cube, with all players working toward the collective goal of discovering the secret within the cube.

The player who destroyed the final bit of the cube and unlocked the secret inside was Bryan Henderson from the UK. Molyneux says they gave Henderson the option of keeping Curiosity’s secret to himself, but Henderson has opted to disclose the contents of the cube with everybody. The secret is revealed by Molyneux himself in the video below:

Basically, the big prize waiting at the core of the cube is this: according to Molyneux, Henderson will be a “digital god” within his studio’s next game, Godus, the Kickstarter-funded spiritual successor to Populous. Henderson will be given the ability to directly influence the gameplay of Godus, and he will be given a share of any profits that Godus generates. Since Godus is a “god game,” all of the players are technically playing the role of “god,” but apparently Henderson will be able to define the rules that everybody else will need to abide by. Molyneux is promising that Henderson’s role as the game’s god will bring him fame and fortune.

It’s a neat prize, sure, but I’m not sure it’s exactly “life changing,” especially since Godus is such a niche project. Then again, Molyneux also promised that the original Fable would be “the best RPG of all time,” (spoiler: it wasn’t,) so perhaps we should have all expected something like this. In the end, the finale to months of hyperbolic promises about Molyneux’s latest game ended up being more hyperbolic promises about Molyneux’s next game.
