Sony has uploaded a teaser for their upcoming E3 presentation onto their YouTube channel, and the video gives us our first tantalizing look at how the PS4 will actually look. (SPOILER: it’s a black plastic box.)
Being a teaser and all, we don’t really get a good look at the system itself: just a few out of focus shots and a few quick, extreme close-ups of parts of the system. Based on what we’ve seen so far, the console looks like… well, every other console ever made: it’s a plastic box with vents.
Y’know, I honestly don’t understand why everyone’s so obsessed with how consoles physically look, especially since Sony has already given us more important info about the PS4, including how its controller works, the console’s launch line-up, and its graphical capabilities. But I suppose they need to go into E3 with some level of mystique, hence all the hype for the reveal of the console itself. You have to give it up to Sony’s PR team — they’ve got the internet excited over the reveal of what basically amounts to a PC case.
The timing of the release of this teaser trailer is obviously deliberate: Microsoft is set to unveil the next Xbox within the week, and since the news for the next few days will probably be dominated by Microsoft, Sony probably just wanted to remind us all that they have a mysterious next-gen console too.
We won’t get to see the PS4 console until E3 in a few weeks (check back then for some hands-on impressions with Sony’s latest powerhouse,) but there’s sure to be a lot of info about the system in the coming days as Microsoft and Sony battle for the public’s attention.
