Gran Turismo 6 would definitely be a killer launch app for Sony’s PS4, but a new retailer listing suggests that the next sequel in Sony’s mega-popular racing will race onto the PS3 instead.
Newegg put up a pre-order listing (which has since been removed) for Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3 earlier today, and a European retailer followed suit shortly after. According to both sites, GT6 will launch on November 28th.
Gran Turismo 6 was originally announced (by accident, seemingly,) during last February’s Playstation Meeting event in New York City, when Sony exec casually mentioned the game without realizing that Sony had yet to formally announce the title. “Look at the games coming out on the PlayStation 3 like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6 and then on the third-party side of things another fantastic Assassin’s Creed, GTA,” Denny said. Sony later clarified that the team at Polyphony Digital has been working on GT6 since 2010, and that they’d have more to announce about the game within the year.
Gran Turismo has traditionally been one of Sony’s biggest first-party franchises, with over 68 million copies sold across the 5 games in the series. Gran Turismo 6 would probably be a guaranteed system seller for the PS4, so it’s kind of strange that Sony has decided to instead release it for the aging PS3 instead of reworking it into a next-gen title (Sony has already stated that the PS4 won’t be backwards compatible with PS3 games.) Still, it’s nice to know that Sony isn’t going to abandon the PS3 as soon as the next-gen begins.
