Neo Geo X not discontinued, more game cards in the works

Michael Lacerna 26 Jan

Hardcore retro gamers everywhere entered a collective panic earlier this week when rumors started circulating that the Neo Geo X had been discontinued. Fans of the retro handheld/console can rest easy today though, because it appears that those rumors were only partially accurate.

While earlier reports suggested that the entire Neo Geo X line of hardware was being discontinued, it turns out that it’s just the Limited Edition version of the hardware that’s been scrapped. Distributor Tommo says that this was part of the plan all along (after all, “Limited Editions” should have limited production runs,) and production of the standard Neo Geo X hardware and all of its related accessories will continue unabated. Tommo says there are more game cards and peripherals in the works for the recently released system.

I’ve always wanted to own a real Neo Geo console ever since I was a little kid, and while I could never afford to actually get a real Neo Geo AES back in the 90’s, I think I’ll probably pick up the Neo Geo X the next chance I get. I almost had a heart attack earlier this week when I heard the rumors that the system had been discontinued, and I owe it to my 10 year old self to not pass up another opportunity to pick up the system (well, a version of it anyway,) that I’ve been coveting for over 20 years. There probably isn’t much profit gained from creating a niche product like the Neo Geo X, but I’m glad that Tommo is sticking with it: it’d be a shame if the system died before they managed to port classics like Metal Slug X or Garou: Mark of the Wolves.
