Capcom’s probably made millions this generation repackaging their classic arcade fighters like Street Fighter 3: Third Strike and Marvel vs. Capcom, and now they’re hoping to continue cashing in on gamers’ nostalgia with the Capcom Arcade Cabinet, a Virtual Console-esque service that will allow gamers to download perfectly emulated versions of classic arcade games. The Capcom Arcade Cabinet app will be a free download on both PSN and XBLA, and it will include one free game, which is rumored to be the classic arcade platformer Black Tiger. Further games will of course be paid downloads, though Capcom hasn’t announced how much games on Arcade Cabinet will cost or which games will be included in the app’s lineup.
I personally think this is kind of neat — while Capcom has pretty much milked all of their classic fighting game franchises to death with HD re-releases and online compatible remakes already (sans Capcom vs. SNK 2 of course; Capcom, get working on that,) Capcom still has a pretty sizable backlog of older or more niche arcade titles that I’m sure a lot of retro gamers out there would love to get a legitimate copy of.
Capcom will announce more details regarding the Arcade Cabinet on February 7th.
