New releases for the the original Wii e-shop dried up a few years ago, so it’s easy to forget that yes, you can download games to your Wii. But hey, the Wii still has one of its best and most underrated features: the Virtual Console selection of retro downloads! Unfortunately, it seems like 3 of the SNES’ most famous games will soon be removed from the Virtual Console library.
Wii users in Europe have received messages from Nintendo stating that Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, and 3 will no longer be available for purchase or download from the system’s Virtual Console service. Nintendo hasn’t given a reason why the titles are being removed; some people have speculated that perhaps the titles are part of a legal snafu between Nintendo and their former second party Rare (now owned by Microsoft,) though that story seems doubtful, considering that Nintendo owns all the rights to Donkey Kong outright. If the removal of the games does have something to do with Rare, it’s strange that the company would pursue this course of action now and not years ago when they were originally put up for download.
With that said, I don’t necessarily think it’s a major loss: I know a lot of retro gamers are going to rage at me for saying this, but if you want to play Donkey Kong Country on your Wii, do yourself a favor and pick up the Retro Studios developed Donkey Kong Country Returns — it’s a much better game than any of the original SNES DKC games.
