Every Tuesday I like to take some time to focus on the hardworking and dedicated “YouTubers” within the gaming community, well that or I just link a fun or entertaining video. This week features a video for a game that might be the best $25 I’ve ever spent; in fact this was the video that inspired me to buy the game. Chivalry is a multiplayer medieval combat game which combines many of the more modern elements of multiplayer gaming with the ruthlessness and violence of hand-to-hand combat. I haven’t had this much fun playing a game in a long time. I wasn’t that great at first – I’m still not – but after decapitating a few opponents I’ve decided that it’s definitely a game worth learning how to play well. It doesn’t seem like much, but once you wade into the fray it offers much more depth than initially appears. Of course, if you just want to pick up a battle axe and swing away you can do that too, it’s quite effective.
Criken’s video does point out some of the game’s silliness, and while it does make the game look like it’s full of bugs, after a few nights spent dispatching foes I have to say that it runs pretty smoothly. I haven’t really encountered many of the bugs shown in the video, though that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Most of the time I’m more concerned with defending myself in the game’s hectic combat, sometimes even from members of my own team. Friendly fire seems to be a standard feature in almost every game mode making friendly swings just as dangerous as an enemy’s.
Players can also choose to play as archers, a class that is brutally more difficult than any other I’ve played in my long gaming career. Usually ranged classes have some sort of advantage, but not so here. Firing a bow is easy, but firing a bow well takes practice. Archers also don’t wear and armor meaning at some point you’re going to have to stand and fight someone swinging a battle axe at you which usually doesn’t end well. Still it can be rewarding to snag a head shot with an arrow, even if it’s sometimes an ally.
If you’ve got $25 and a couple of friends to play with it’s definitely a game worth getting. It’s pretty difficult but once you learn to parry and defend yourself it can be both a fun and rewarding experience… and hilariously violent.
