PS3 gets updated YouTube app and smartphone capability

PS3 gets updated YouTube app and smartphone capability

John Sukowaty 14 Aug

Let’s try not to forget about the PS3 while we all sit around wondering what awesome features the new Xbox 720 might bring us.  The PS3 is still just as popular to gamers as the Xbox and according to reports this week, the console will be getting a new YouTube app that you can control with your smartphone.  Watching YouTube might be more popular than ever before and even though each one of us has spent the typical 2 to 3 hours watching footballs getting tossed at groins, there is plenty of content to keep people entertained.  The PS3 has plenty of apps that allow you to stream various bits of content, but a YouTube app was always just sort of missing.

Sony and Google have finally got to together to bring a new YouTube application to the PS3.  The new app brings a couple of features that might get your attention like the layout that looks awesome on your big screen and controls that are optimized for the PS3 controller.  As soon as you start the app, you can login and gain the same access you get online to your YouTube account, subscribed channels and other features on the most popular video streaming site in the world.

Adding to the already cool idea that you can stream your favorite YouTube videos over your monster 60″ LCD HDTV, you can also control the app from your smartphone.  Sony added the feature that allows you to take any video you are watching on your phone and essentially toss it onto the big screen for all to see.  On your smartphone you will be asked to activate your device and from that point you will be able to use the feature.  The new app will be rolling out starting today and should be on all off the PS3’s by the end of the month for sure.
